The CDCP will help reduce or eliminate the cost of dental care for millions of uninsured Canadians who have a net annual family income of less than $90,000.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Have no access to dental insurance
  • Have a net annual family income of less than $90,000
  • You’re a Canadian citizen
  • Your family has filed income taxes in Canada for the previous tax year

Dental Care Services

A wide range of dental care services are covered under the CDCP, on the recommendation of an oral health provider, including:

  • Scaling (cleaning)
  • Exams
  • X-Rays
  • Fillings
  • Removable dentures
  • Root canal treatments
  • Oral surgery

The CDCP will reimburse a percentage of the cost, based on established CDCP fees and your adjusted family net income.

How CDCP Works at Richmond Dental Centre

We proudly accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and align our rates with the CDCP Federal Fee Guide.

 

If you have 100% CDCP coverage, you may pay $0 out-of-pocket for covered treatments.

 

If your coverage is less than 100%, your portion is calculated based on the CDCP fee guide, which can help reduce your out-of-pocket costs compared to standard dental fees.

 

What this means for you:

  • Patients with 100% CDCP coverage may have no out-of-pocket costs for covered services.
  • Patients with partial coverage may pay a reduced amount based on their coverage level.
  • Our team will review your benefits with you and explain any costs before treatment begins.

You may have to pay additional charges directly to the oral health provider, if:

  • your adjusted family net income is between $70,000 and $89,999
  • the cost of your oral health care services are more than the established CDCP fees, or
  • you and your oral health provider agree to services that the CDCP doesn’t cover

The CDCP will only reimburse providers directly. CDCP clients should confirm at time of appointment as well as before receiving care that their provider has agreed to bill Sunlife directly for services covered under the CDCP.

FAQs About Canadian Dental Care Plan

To qualify for the CDCP, you must be a Canadian resident, have filed your taxes, meet the income requirements, and not have access to private dental insurance through an employer, pension, professional association, or personal plan. Eligibility is determined by the Government of Canada.

Not always. The CDCP helps cover eligible dental services, but it may not pay the full cost of treatment. Depending on your family income and the fees charged by your dental office, you may be responsible for a co-payment or additional out-of-pocket costs.

The CDCP covers many preventive, diagnostic, restorative, endodontic, periodontal, and prosthodontic services. Some treatments, such as certain crowns, dentures, and specialized procedures, may require preauthorization before coverage is approved.

Most routine services, such as exams, cleanings, fillings, and basic extractions, do not require approval. However, some treatments require preauthorization from the CDCP before they can be covered. Your dental team can help determine if preauthorization is needed and submit the necessary documentation on your behalf.
